AHRN.com Goes Mobile – Finally

When I talk to other spouses about renting a home most of them recommend AHRN.com a government run Real Estate referral website or military members.

This website has become one of the major resource for renting/buying or selling homes of military members. It’s free, it’s fairly user friendly (yes , I would like to see some changes but compared to other military websites: Kudos to the developers), it has a high visibility among other military members, which helps when you are trying to solve your housing issues. Blue Star familiesLet’s all get smarter! You can feed your brain cells for free if you are a active duty family. You may be serving in the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard and Reserve. Starting this Memorial Day, May 30th, to the end of the summer Labor Day, Sept. 5 visit a local museum without paying.

More than 1,300 museum will allow admission free entrance for active duty families! The complete list of participating museums here . What an extraordinary achievement!

The program began in summer of 2010, when 300,000 military family members visited the partner museums. This year, more than 1,324 (and counting) museums in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and American Samoa are taking part in the initiative, including more than 500 new museums this year. Museums are welcome to join Blue Star Museums throughout the summer.

This year’s Blue Star Museums represent not just fine arts museums, but also science museums, history museums, nature centers and 70 children’s museums.

CPR Sequence Changes

Most service members who have gone through CPR training remember being taught the ABCs, or airway-breathing-circulation. However, the American Heart Association (AHA) is now suggesting that people change the ABC sequence to CAB, or circulation-airway-breathing.  Watch the video if you want to know more.

Traveling Commissary/ On Site Sales

OOOOh, I got all giddy when I saw the new DeCa /Commissaries website. A new design that is appealing and easy to navigate. I’ll have to review the site in a separate post! For now, here is the list of on-site sales.

YOU CAN ASK FOR AN ONSITE SALE TO COME TO YOUR AREA!

The host commissary works with Guard/Reserve units that have at least 150 members stationed in an area and selects items to offer to these individuals during the sale. For information on how to have a sale near you, contact your unit who can then call the nearest Commissary to discuss the possibility.

AHRN updates

ahrnSpring is here and so is the PCS (Permanent Change of Station) season. Each year the military moves @600,000 members, with more than 1/3 of those moving between Memorial Day and Labor Day. In 2010 the military processed 230,000 moves between Memorial Day and Labor Day, 38% of the total annual moves. In 2011, the number of moves is expected to increase by 10,000 due to the base realignment and closure process.

Automated Housing Referral Network has developed into one of the strongest free Real Estate Networks for military service members. Advertising your property on AHRN.com should be a part of your marketing plan to sell your house or to advertise it for rent. If you real estate agent /property manager has not advertised your home on AHRN.com then YOU should do it.

  • Since pictures speak louder than words AHRN.com has increased the number of photos that can be uploaded from 5 to 10. If you already have a listing, upload some more of your photos
  • The listing detail printer friendly option has been revised and condensed to one page. Now it’s easy to print out a list of rentals/ homes for sale and go for a drive. Makes it so much more efficient. The only thing better than that would probably be an app.

Did you know, you can also list temporary lodging listings ?

Did you know that the privatized [Military Housing Privatization Initiative (MHPI)] on base/post housing is also advertised?

AHRN is currently available at 513 military installations world-wide, comprised of 476 installations throughout the United States and 37 installations in Europe and the Pacific (click here to see list). Over 19,000 new users register in AHRN each month!

Employees, Servicemembers are being advised

canceled programs due to government shut downThe furlough has been mentioned to most employees and service members, now with the impending possible shut-down of the government, guidance on procedures is ‘trickling’ down the information trees to all impacted.

Some commands are ‘cautiously optimistic’ that Congress and the President will approve a funding instrument that will keep the government running. However, it is felt prudent to establish procedures in the event of such a shut-down.

Resources such as the OPM website is being passed on as well as the Deputy Secretary of Defenses’ Memo on Shut down. It was said that (mainly in reference to employees)

  • “Employees are required to report to work on the next duty day after the lapse in appropriations, which would be Monday, 11 April 2011.”

  • “Supervisors are advised not to execute TDY this weekend; in addition, all paid leave will be cancelled.”

  • “Employees will be provided direction on Monday 11 April as to what, if any, further “exempt” work, in accordance with HQDA guidance, they should perform.”

  • ” Absent “exempt” work to be performed, employees will be placed in “furlough” status, not on duty, no pay status, until further notification.”

  • “Telework will not be authorized for employees in “furlough” status.”

  • “Therefore, bring all government owned equipment in Monday.”

  • “If notified that you are Non-Exempt you will be advised to turn off blackberries and cell phones and leave in your desk while leaving your  laptops connected to the network or turned off in your area.”

  • “Timecards should be completed and processed NLT 1200 noon Friday, 8 April to ensure employees are paid for services rendere

d for the current pay period.”

Now this most likely will look a little different where YOU live/work but it gives us an idea on actions being taken.
