Scoop on Airline Marriage and Military Pet PCS

Guest blog writer, Happy Tails Travel

The imminent merger of two large U.S. commercial airlines will not affect the costs for service members shipping their pets with them on military-contracted “Patriot Express” flights as they make permanent change-of-station moves, according to defense officials.

“Our contract allows pets to fly for a tariff that’s already been negotiated,” said Cynthia Bauer, spokeswoman for the U.S. Transportation Command.

A variety of commercial passenger carriers contract with the Defense Department for Patriot Express flights, Bauer said, adding that Patriot Express missions are “the primary way” that military passengers on official orders move to and from the U.S. and overseas locations.

Currently, service members moving to or from overseas locations and flying on contracted Patriot Express aircraft pay $112 to fly a pet weighing up to 70 pounds, regardless of where they are flying, Bauer said. For pets weighing more than that and up to 140 pounds, it’s another $112, or a total of $224.

That cost is set by TransCom, along with the Air Mobility Command, at the time that the contract that includes Patriot Express flights is agreed to, Bauer said. “It’s not negotiable,” she said. “That’s what the service member pays.”

United Airlines and Continental Airlines are two of the Patriot Express carriers. As those two airlines merge, the new United will adopt Continental’s PetSafe program. Beginning March 3, except for small animals that can be carried on board, United will no longer check in animals at the airport ticket counter for travel in the cargo area of the plane. Instead, passengers will take their pets to cargo facilities or express offices.

But for those shipping pets outside the Patriot Express venue, costs could increase in some areas. For example, “due to Japanese law, anyone shipping their pets from Japan pays our PetSafe rate and a third party forwarder at market rates,” said Mary Ryan, a spokeswoman for United.

She said the company realizes the pricing could affect some military families who do not use Patriot Express flights, and is evaluating its pricing from Narita International Airport. Information was not available about the differences in pricing at press time, but one source told the Defense Department newspaper Stars and Stripes that prices for shipping under the new system could reach almost $4,000.

“Patriot Express is a good first option for [military] travelers, especially those travelers with pets,” Bauer said, adding that local transportation offices can help military members and their families with the latest information.

Commissary Shopping Primer

Commissary shopping tipsI am so excited to introduce Abby to you. She is a military wife and the mother of three. She has learned over the years how to make the most of her family’s budget.  In this process she has become a very thrifty online shopper and has learned quite a few tricks to the trade that she shares with everyone on her blog:

To always be informed about the latest deals and events its best for you to “like” her on Facebook or follow her on Twitter @stealsdeals.

Read what Abby suggests and save some money….oh and spend what you save on yourself!

Shopping at the Commissary can save you lots of money as many of you know. I have a couple of tips to helping you save even more at the Commissary when you plan your next grocery trip.

Planning your meals around what is on sale

One of the best ways to prepare your shopping trip is to plan your meals around what is on sale. Did you know that you can find out what is on sale at The Commissary the 1st and 16th of each month at this site called Commissaries.com. Note you will need to put in your SSN and Date of birth to be able to access the sales. The prices at the Commissary change every two weeks and here is where you can find the new prices.

The prices at the Commissary are great as they are priced at cost. But you can save even more by applying coupons to those prices. You will find the coupons I suggest you bring with each shopping trip to the Commissary on my blog Steals plus Deals on the 1st and 16th of each month. You can also check sites such as Hot Coupon World for a list of all of the coupons that are available in their coupon database.

Where do I get coupons?

1. Newspaper There are lots of places to get coupons. The best place is going to be in your Sunday newspaper. You will find the inserts such as Smart Source, Proctor & Gamble, and Red Plum inserts chocked full of coupons each week.
2. Printable coupons There are also lots of printable coupons available. My favorite places are
Coupons.com

Red Plum

Target’s Printable Grocery Coupons

(did you know the Commissary will accept Store coupons from other stores as long as it doesn’t read redeemable ONLY at that store)
3. Maxi Saver At the entrance to the Commissary you will often find coupons there you are encouraged to pick up. You can go to this site to check and see what coupons are available ahead of time each month from the Maxi Saver.
4. Blinkie or hangtag coupons. I have found that the vendors of various products are very generous with providing Commissary customers with lots of coupons within the store. So keep your eye out as you walk down the aisles for lots of tags located hanging off of products or in blinkie machines.

Commissary or your local grocery store?

Also you will want to keep in mind that although you do not pay sales tax at the Commissary you do pay a 5% surcharge. This surcharge is applied to your total before coupons are applied. So although you don’t pay taxes you need to decide whether that surcharge amount before your coupons are taken off is going to be a bigger savings than your local sales tax.  Sometimes you are better offer off shopping your local grocery store. This really all depends on what the sales tax is for the area you live in.

Thank you so much to Military Duty Stations for the opportunity to do this guest post. My name is Abby and I am a military wife that is the author of the blog Steals plus deals. I welcome you to come over and check out my blog as I often discuss deals that focus around the Commissary, Exchange, or deals that focus on items military families would be interested in.

Which Branch Is Most Important? OUCH?

This morning Spousebuzz reported about a Gallup poll the American general public to indicate “just off the top off their heads” which of the five branches of the armed forces in the US they would say is most important to our national defense today and then they asked which branch they thought is most prestigious. See results below.

First of all I needed to sort my thoughts, because this poll caused a big stir in my brain.

OUCH. As a military wife I feel with ALL the other wives. I can empathize with those who have spouses that are deployed/on assignment/at sea. Then reading the poll results can be disheartening when you are putting so much effort into keeping your family together.  Regardless of where the active duty spouse is, the military family spouse is at home, worrying and ‘keeping up the homefront’. Let’s just say I was a Navy spouse- the result of this poll would cut deep. Imagine you are a ‘Coastie’ and you are without your husband who is serving for your country and then be recognized by 3% as important. Wow.

Well, quite frankly I don’t want to read too much into those polls.

Sometimes it’s how they are worded. However, this will read in the news-world that “Air Force and Navy are not important according to Americans”.

Ladies, I believe we are one united force and we stand together regardless which branch we are associated with. Can I get an Hooah, Ooorah, Ooah?

How do YOU feel about this? I wanted to place my own poll here but decided against it as I believe it does NOTHING to help us stand strong.

They also inquired which armed forces branch the general American public thought of most prestigious.

$48Mio to keep military families in touch

AT&T gets $48 mio government contract MoraleSatUS Marine Corps MWR Business Operations Division has awarded AT&T Government Solutions a series of task orders worth up to USD 48 million to provide satellite-based voice, video, and internet services to deployed military service personnel overseas. The money will be spent on designing, deploying and maintaining a US Marine Corps Satellite called MoraleSat. MoraleSat allows forward-deployed military personnel in Southwest Asia to communicate with family and friends.

“AT&T is honored to deploy and maintain MoraleSat and provide a secure and reliable network, and portable communication terminals, to help soldiers stay connected while they serve our country overseas.”

While this news will not replace having your service member at home but more frequent calls, or comments on social media keeps everyone a little closer.

“The U.S. military needed a global network that could handle large volumes of morale-type voice, video, and data traffic that did not affect mission-critical networks,” said John Klebonis, Vice President, AT&T Government Solutions.”

It seems like the news, that Osama Bin Laden is dead, rang in this 13th Military Appreciation Month with a special tone.

Finally! My friend from Libya writes!

If you have loved ones -family obenghazi-libya-protestersr friends – that are struck by disaster, you worry. You’ll try and get in touch with them to get some kind of acknowledgment that they are alive and hopefully all is well.

I have a friend that lives in Benghazi, Libya. When the situation in this country was heating up I emailed her wondering if she was ok.

When I finally received an email I was relieved but what I read, was devastating.

I am publishing her emails, because it gives a unique glimpse into her struggles and puts a face on to the uprising and fighting in Libya.

I am listening to the news from Libya with great interest…but first I must know that you are OK.
How are things?  Send a short note so I know you are OK.

I hadn’t heard from her and my concern was growing. Finally, March 1st I received an answer to my email that I sent saying:

Hi,

I’m fine thanx. I’m back in benghazi since 10 Feb before the revolution started my husband was supposed to come but he got stuck in Tripoli.

the event actually started on 16th no media was allowed in libya and communication was cut off. it’s qaddafi strategy to hide his crimes from the world. that’s why ppl found themselves facing a criminal and they had to act.

what you see in AlJazeera is true these guys are reporting the whole truth to the detail .guys age 15 and above in peaceful protest were faced with live ammunition, and heavy machine guns Qaddafi hired black ppl from Africa they landed in many libyan cities dressed in army suits and they had yellow safety helmets on. shooting and killing ppl. in Al-bayda Derna and Shahat Al marge city and all far east libya they managed to arrest them and they killed some and they kept some in jail for further investigations. these black ppl speak french.

same happend in benghazi. it’s terrorism. sometimes we see ambulance car coming to the battle field and guys rush injured ppl to get them onboard suddenly the door opens and black soldiers come out of it and open fire. they use ambulance cars as ambush.

Security forces opened the jail house to let criminals loose in city to terrify people and commit crimes which later on he will accuse the revolution guys of committing.

libyan young guys were determined to take down the regime so they surrounded the army base, airport, top security base and they managed to take over.they faced life amunition with bare chests using stones, molotov, taking garbage containers as sheild to get closer then throw home made bombs. around 2000 died but this was like fuel to the fire.. many others came out and more people were convenced that qaddafi is a terrorist killing his own people. so after the bases were down and military joined revolution distributed weapons and guns all over the city so we can protect ourselves from Qaddafi forces.

in east area things are under control but tripoli is still struggling i receive many calls from people telling me that military killed young guys and they burned their bodies to hide the evedince my husband told me the shooring is still continuous night and day and he shelters wounded guys in our apartment because if they go to hospital they get arrested and kidnapped.

the remarkable thing is people are one hand they donate blood, money, food and i saw some donate thousands of dollars to feed and buy medicine, blankets, water, carpets, matresses, ..etc to hospitals we’re reporting any security incidents to a commetty we elected. and last week the loose criminals attached philipin nurses and they took their moibiles, money and whatever they found some were sexually raped. so now these nurses are moved to live in  floor 4 of ibn sina hospital around 70 nurses and ppl provide them with food and making sure they’re safe. the other day i was directing traffic in a junction because no police in city but now they’re back.

we the civilians are cooperating with eachother and we’re doing our best to ensure safety and security and we opend port with egyp borders to get food supply and medicine. but in tripoli things are getting harder as qaddafi is still in control and he makes sure they suffer lack of services and food.

yesterday he announced distributing 500 Ld to each libyan family ( what a joke) even his bribes are cheap. he wants people to shut up. and to show the media he’s giving money and helping people.

he fakes interviews on libyan tv and you know the game so plz dont beleive what you see .. i assure you Aljazeera is broadcasting the truth.

in Ajedabia east benghazi last night was aircraft bombing and also in misrata and zawia this guys is nuts and he threatend to kill us all and burn the petrol.

many of my friends in benghazi took their guns they got from army base and they drove to Tripoli to support ppl there.

i know qaddafi has a secure base in tripoli but the dangerous one is in sirt. i won’t be surprised if he uses weapons of mass distructions.

mobile phones are working now.. internet is back since 2 days. but very weak

thanx for checking on me Tim i appreciate it. i hope my english is understood im writing in a hurry and my thoughts are distracted.

take care and pray for us.

So, I sat, stunned and shocked. I wish I could reach out and touch her, comfort her. She is strong but the fear rings through in her email. After my reply to her with reassurances of our family’s prayers and support It was another 13 days before I would hear from her:

my friend,

Thank you so much for keeping in touch and i appreciate your concerns, efforts and prayers.

We still don’t have internet connection i have to drive around and book in many cafe’s to get a chance to log in and access my email.

Today i was able to talk to my husband pc to phone. He’s still stuck in Tripoli. and he was worried sick when he heared the Qaddafi forces attacked Benghazi and bombed our neighbourhood.

Tabulino is the area west Benghazi  i think you saw it on TV.  I spent all night on the roof watching anti aircraft like fireworks and in morning 6 am they bombed  our neighbourhood and the aircraft fell very near to our house.

My sister unfortunately the kids witnessed that day and i hope it won’t affect them psychologically.

My eldest brother ( neurosurgeon in UK ) he also came through Egypt and started operating on cases in hospital.

I’m fine doing all i can to help people in need.  Esp. Taking care of the church, the priest and the nuns. These people are forgotten in the middle of these events and they’re scared and facing daily challenges even to buy food and simple stuff. Last Sunday  me and my mom arranged a convoy for the priest to travel to almarj ( they have mass ceremony there) . and we arranged for an armed guard to be assigned at the church. Sounds strange but as i told you criminals are loose and last week they broke into the church and stole a car and some other stuff.

I have an interview appointment with UN i think it’s better to work under an organization. What do you think?

We all thank the US, Qatar, France, and NATO ( with it’s ups and downs) but i wonder why they don’t attack the forces near misrata, Tripoli and west Libya?  Another question… before they arm us can they send communication equipment to the guys in front lines? Or maybe let an aircraft drop them bundles of  personal protective equipments..eg. gas masks, bullet proof vests, ear plugs, boots, helmets..etc. these guys are fighting with no protections.

This was a quick email.. because i have limited time to access and give chance to others.

I copied your email and will prepare my reply offline from home. Send it  asap

This has been so long ago, and I worry as I have not heard from her since. Please pray for her and her family.
